NSAID / aspirin hypersensitivity
Analgesic/NSAID
Drug classes to avoid
NSAIDSalicylate
Reaction signs & chairside management
Bronchospasm or urticaria/angioedema on exposure
NSAID hypersensitivity is often a pseudoallergic (COX-1-mediated) reaction rather than true IgE allergy, and frequently cross-reacts across the entire NSAID class rather than being drug-specific.
Clinical management: Avoid NSAIDs (including ibuprofen, naproxen) and aspirin for dental pain management; use acetaminophen instead, and confirm with the prescriber if opioid analgesia is being considered.
