Beclomethasone (inhaled)
Inhaled corticosteroid
Brand names: Qvar
Oral health effects
Oral candidiasis
Same thrush risk as other inhaled corticosteroids.
Clinical management: Rinse/gargle and spit after use; spacer; antifungal if needed.
Hoarseness (dysphonia)
Dysphonia is a common local effect of inhaled corticosteroids, reported in 5-58% of patients across studies, and is attributed to steroid deposition in the laryngopharynx.
Clinical management: Encourage spacer use, plus rinsing, gargling and spitting after each dose. Report persistent hoarseness to the prescriber; hoarseness lasting more than a few weeks needs a laryngeal exam.
