Budesonide (inhaled)

Inhaled corticosteroid

Brand names: Pulmicort

Oral health effects

  • Oral candidiasis / dysphonia

Same thrush risk as other inhaled steroids; hoarseness also common.

Clinical management: Rinse and spit after use; use a spacer; treat candidiasis if it develops.

  • Taste alteration (taste perversion)

Taste perversion was reported in 1-3% of patients in clinical trials of budesonide dry-powder inhaler.

Clinical management: Advise rinsing the mouth with water after each dose, which also lowers thrush risk. Reassure the patient, and avoid sugary sweets used to mask the taste.
