Calcium carbonate (antacid)

Antacid

Brand names: Tums, Maalox

Oral health effects

  • Drug-binding / chewable acid-sugar exposure

Antacids can reduce absorption of some dental drugs (e.g., tetracyclines, certain fluoroquinolones) if taken together; frequent chewable tablets add acid/sugar exposure.

Clinical management: Separate dosing from interacting antibiotics; counsel on frequent chewable use.
