Clonazepam

Benzodiazepine

Brand names: Klonopin

Oral health effects

  • Xerostomia (dry mouth)

Reduced salivary flow raising caries, candidiasis, and mucosal discomfort risk.

Clinical management: Hydration, sugar-free gum/xylitol, salivary substitutes, high-fluoride products; reinforce caries prevention.

  • Burning mouth symptom management (therapeutic)

Topical/low-dose clonazepam is sometimes used to treat burning mouth syndrome.

Clinical management: Context-dependent; note this is a therapeutic use rather than a side effect.

  • Excess saliva (hypersalivation)

The label warns that clonazepam may increase salivation, which matters for patients who have difficulty handling secretions.

Clinical management: Use high-volume suction and keep the patient semi-upright if salivation is increased; take extra care with sedated or neurologically impaired patients at risk of aspiration.
