Cyclobenzaprine
Skeletal muscle relaxant
Brand names: Flexeril, Amrix
Oral health effects
Xerostomia (dry mouth)
Structurally TCA-like, so anticholinergic dry mouth is common. Sometimes prescribed for TMD-related muscle pain.
Mechanism: Anticholinergic activity reduces salivary secretion.
Clinical management: Hydration, salivary substitutes, high-fluoride caries prevention.
Unpleasant taste (dysgeusia)
Unpleasant taste is reported in 1–3% of patients.
Clinical management: Ask about altered or metallic taste, which can reduce appetite and oral comfort; reassure that it is drug-related and often fades. Rule out oral candidiasis or poor hygiene as contributors and encourage sugar-free options rather than sweet foods/drinks used to mask the taste.
