Medication

Insulin

Antihyperglycemic (hormone)

Brand names: Humalog, Lantus, Novolog

Oral health effects

  • Hypoglycemia risk during appointments

The main chairside concern is a hypoglycemic episode, especially if a patient skipped a meal before treatment.

Clinical management: Confirm the patient has eaten; keep oral glucose available; schedule to avoid peak insulin action.

  • Indirect periodontal/caries risk via glycemic control

These agents do not act directly on the mouth, but the underlying diabetes (and how well it is controlled) strongly influences periodontal disease, healing, and infection risk.

Clinical management: Reinforce that good glycemic control supports periodontal health; coordinate care and note HbA1c.
