Oxcarbazepine
Anticonvulsant
Brand names: Trileptal
Oral health effects
Xerostomia
Dry mouth reported; lower SJS risk than carbamazepine but still possible.
Clinical management: Hydration and caries prevention.
Severe mucocutaneous reactions (SJS/TEN)
Serious skin reactions including SJS and TEN, with oral ulceration, are a label warning, and HLA-B*15:02 is a risk factor. Currently mentioned only in passing in the site's dry-mouth entry.
Clinical management: Ask about new rash, fever or mouth ulcers, especially in the first two months of therapy. Painful erosions of the lips and mouth with skin rash are a medical emergency: refer urgently to the physician and do not delay for dental treatment.
Taste disturbance (dysgeusia)
Taste perversion was reported in 5% of patients in a monotherapy trial (vs 0% on placebo).
Clinical management: Ask about altered or metallic taste, which can reduce appetite and oral comfort; reassure that it is drug-related and often fades. Rule out oral candidiasis or poor hygiene as contributors and encourage sugar-free options rather than sweet foods/drinks used to mask the taste.
