Rizatriptan
Anti-migraine (triptan, 5-HT1 agonist)
Brand names: Maxalt
Oral health effects
Xerostomia (dry mouth)
Dry mouth and occasional taste changes.
Clinical management: Hydration, salivary substitutes, high-fluoride caries prevention.
Jaw, throat or neck tightness after dosing
Tightness, pain or pressure in the jaw, throat, neck or chest commonly follows a dose (up to 2% for neck/throat/jaw symptoms in trials); usually non-cardiac (label warning).
Clinical management: If a patient reports jaw pain or tightness, ask whether they recently took a triptan before attributing it to a dental cause. Chest pain or symptoms that do not settle need medical assessment because rare cardiac events occur.
